Community Outreach - PROEVAL RAXMU Bird Monitoring Program

To raise environmental awareness among local indigenous communities, PROEVAL RAXMU carries out popular activities in rural villages. In slide presentations we inform about birds and their habitat, bird monitoring, birding tourism, and conservation. Waterproof posters in Maya Q'eqchi' language, Spanish, and English, inform local people and visitors about the local avifauna.

Communities and landowners at the three continous effort monitoring sites Ik'bolay, Sacranix, and Yalijux maintain tourism programs focussed on nature, including birdwatching. PROEVAL RAXMU Bird Monitoring Program helps to promote the birding sites by producing local bird checklists, brochures, and posters. Use the following links to see some examples from our monitoring sites:
Community outreach in the Yalijux mountain
Community outreach in the Sacranix mountain
Community outreach in the Ik'bolay region and Laguna Lachuá National Park

The PROEVAL RAXMU bird census takers are highly skilled in identifying and finding birds, especially by their calls and songs. This ability makes them excellent local birding guides. All three bird monitoring sites are being promoted as birding hotspots in Guatemala, which provides additional income to local farmers:
