The private nature reserves Chelemhá and K'anti Shul protect cloud forest along the ridge of the Yalijux mountain. Chelemhá's tourism program is focused on birdwatching and nature (cloud forest, Resplendent Quetzal). Local stakeholders including PROEVAL RAXMU, Cayaya Birding, and guatemalastory.com helped to train local tourism guides and start a community tourism program in the Q'eqchi' village of Chelemá, neighboring to the reserve.
PROEVAL RAXMU Bird Monitoring Program has designed posters about the birds of the area and about the Yalijux Important Bird Area (IBA GT010), which give information to the local villagers and to national and international visitors. A checklist of the birds of Chelemhá and K'anti Shul is a byproduct of PROEVAL RAXMU's continous effort monitoring of bird populations.
The PROEVAL RAXMU bird census takers from the villages of Chelemá and Chelemá Dos are highly skilled in identifying and finding birds, especially by their calls and songs. This ability makes them excellent local birding guides. Chelemhá is a birding hotspot in Guatemala, which helpd to provides additional income opportunities to local farmers:
