Monitoring bird populations in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala.

Vegetation Structure

Monitoreo de aves
Monitoreo de aves

In order to link bird distribution and density data to the habitat, vegetations structure was measured on all count points at the monitoring sites in the Ik'bolay region and at Sierra Sierra Sacranix in 2005/2006.

Methods

Vegetation density was determined in 18 strata from 0.5 to 45 m. We used a 6 m long pole, marked from 0.5 to 6 m. On each established bird count point vegetation data were taken on 10 points at the distance of 10 to 30 m on both sides of the transect. The pole was erected vertically and notes were taken whether some plant parts touch the marks. Above 6 m it was estimated if plants touch imagined elongation of the pole in 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and >40 m. The percentage of the presence of plant parts was used as index of vegetation density.
