Institution: PROEVAL-RAXMU
The goal of this program is the motivation of local people toward conserving their own forest. Programs of environmental education and bird monitoring are being developed to contribute to this goal in the long term. Still there it is urgent to contribute to this goal in a short term, since Guatemala has one of the highest deforestation rates in Latin America (FAO 2003).
The Forestry Incentives Program (PINFOR, by its abbreviation in Spanish) from the National Institute of Forests (INAB, by its abbreviation in Spanish) is an instrument to motivate the owners to protect their forests, through an incentive payment. PROEVAL-RAXMU acts like an agent to promote this program among the forest owners, and supports the local people in the work of the requested studies.
To identify the most important areas for conservation, PROEVAL RAXMU analized satellite photos (Landsat ETM) to create a detailed image of the primary forest distribution. See the following map of landscape use.
PROEVAL RAXMU acts as agent for landowners who are willing to sell their land for conservation purposes, see details.
