Since July 2006 farmers from villages adjacent to the Chelemhá and K’anti Shul Reserves are being trained to conduct bird counts in the cloud forest of both nature reserves. See Part I: Introduction and Methods for the methodology of this training. Previous studies showed a high importance of the Yalijux Mountain for conservation (Eisermann 1999, Eisermann & Schulz 2002, Renner 2003, Renner et al. 2006). Several bird species endemic to the northern Central American highland were reported. A population interchange of Resplendent Quetzals (Pharomachrus mocinno) was also evidenced between the Sierra de las Minas mountain range and the Yalijux mountain (Paiz 1996).
